X00245: Solved!

So, it would seem that I have received an early Christmas present this year. A while back in a previous post I mentioned that I had found a marriage between Henry Mundy and Ann Sidney Taylor in an index [D02737].

Since then, I have been trying to obtain the original marriage record and it has proved to be difficult. For one thing, because the marriage was performed by an acting chaplin, it wasn't kept with the rest of the records for Fort George marriages. It also appears that it was never microfilmed. So the question is: who had the original record? The Anglican Church archives said that they didn't have it, and that the Archives of Ontario should have it instead. Then when I talked to the Archives of Ontario, they said that the Anglican Church archives should have it.

Recently I attended a genealogy fair where both the Archives of Ontario and the Anglican Church archives both had booths. So, I figured that I could sort it out once and for all. I gave the information to someone and the Anglican Church archives who ultimately was able to find the original record and send me a copy:

X00287 Samina "Minnie" Foxwell Williams

One of the daughters of Thomas Williams and Sybil Foxwell was named Samina Foxwell Williams. She was born in 1841 in Liverpool, England and emigrated with the rest of the family in the 1840s. For the longest time, I wasn't able to determine what happened to her after 1871: I couldn't find her in any of the Ontario census, marriage or death records.

I did eventually find a name in the Greenwood Cemetery burial listings of a Minnie McInnis who died in 1878 and is buried in a location close to Thomas and Sybil Williams. I figured that Minnie could be a possible nickname for Samina. As far as I am aware, however, there is no surviving gravestone. I'll verify that the next time I'm in Owen Sound.

So, I had a look in the Owen Sound papers and came across this article from the November 29, 1878 Owen Sound Times:

The sister (Mrs John Douglas) would be Louisa Williams. So, it would appear that she married a Joseph McInnis sometime between 1871 and 1878 and died in Walnut, Iowa in November 1878 (one newspaper gives the date as November 25th and another one gives it as November 26th). Thus far, however, I have not been able to find a marriage or death record for her.

So, I'm still looking for marriage and death records. Here are the known facts about Samina "Minnie" Foxwell Williams McInnis:
  • Born Jan 20, 1841 Liverpool, Lancashire, England
  • Baptised May 20, 1841, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
  • Emigrated to Canada West in the 1840s, first settled in Guelph. Later moved to Owen sound.
  • Was in Owen Sound in 1871 and unmarried (from the 1871) census
  • Marriage to Joseph McInnis sometime between 1871 and 1878
  • Died November 26 1878 (or November 25th) in Walnut, Pottawattamie, Iowa, USA
  • Buried Greenwood Cemetery November 30, 1878 Owen Sound, Grey, Ontario, Canada

X00121 Who is Ellen McLeod?

In the 1861 census, the McLeod family has an Ellen McLeod living with them and is listed as a family member [D01599]:

From the 1861 census, Ellen McLeod was born about 1825-1826 in Scotland.

Then, there is an Ellen Reynolds living with the McLeod family in 1871 and 1881 [D01233] & [D01329]:

She is listed as being widowed.

The ultimate question I'm trying to answer is who is Ellen McLeod. But for the time being, I'm trying to determine if Ellen McLeod and Ellen Reynolds are the same person. I've found Ellen Reynolds in the 1891 census, her death registration and her gravestone and it would appear that she was born around the same time as Ellen McLeod in Scotland.

Analysis
If they are the same person:
- Then Ellen McLeod married a Reynolds between 1861 and 1871
- Mr. Reynolds died between 1861 and 1871

If they are two different people:
- Ellen McLeod should appear in the 1871 or later censuses
- Ellen Reynolds should appear in the 1861 census

Next actions:
* Look for marriage between 1861 and 1871 for Ellen McLeod and Reynolds
* Look for 1901 census record for Ellen Reynolds
* Look for death record for Mr. Reynolds between 1861 and 1871
* Look for ellen and john in 1841 census Scotland
* Look for obituary for Ellen Reynolds
* Look for obituary for John McLeod

Marriage Date Found: Adam Smith & Kate Williams

I just realized that it has been a few months since I've posted here. So, here's a quick update. I'm currently working on researching some branches of the Williams family, in particular the Smith family of Eugenia Falls, Ontario.

I was trying to determine the date of marriage for Adam Smith and Kate J. Williams. All evidence pointed to about 1880; their first child was born in 1881, and an article I found suggested that they got married about a year and a half after her older sister Jane Emily Williams married William Henry Madden. The date of that marriage was July 2 1879. So, towards the end of 1880 would seem the most likely date.

The problem is that I couldn't find them in the civil registration marriages for Ontario. So I had a look in the newspapers next. Fortunately, the Grey Highlands Public Library has a collection of Grey Highlands newspapers. I found this article in the Markdale Standard, Dec 3 1880:

The article suggests that the marriage had occurred recently, but didn't give an exact date. I checked earlier newspapers, but found no mention of the actual date. So, knowing that both husband and wife lived past 1930, I decided to look for a 50th anniversary article and found one in the 29 October 1930 issue of Flesherton Advance that mentioned they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on 23 October 1930. So there you have it, I was able to find their marriage date of 23 October 1880 via a roundabout way

X00060 Sybil Williams Death Information

So, here's the issue. I'm trying to find a death record or death information for a Sybil Williams (born Sybil Foxwell) (Feb 17 1798 - May 13, 1874)

Here is the known information:
  • She was born February 17 1798 in Gloucester, England based on her baptism records [Sources: D00157, D00419]
  • She died May 13 1874 based on her tombstone and the Greenwood Cemetery Internment listing [Sources: D01131, D01637]
  • She was buried May 15 1874 Greenwood Cemetery, Owen Sound, Ontario based on the Greenwood Cemetery Internment listing [Source: D01131]
  • Her religion was Church of England [Source: D01565]
  • She was living in Owen Sound in 1871 based on the 1871 census [Source: D01565] and Guelph before that.

Here's the results of my research:
  • Couldn't find anything in the Ontario Civil Death Registrations on either Ancestry or FamilySearch
  • Couldn't find anything in the Ontario Civil Death Registrations on microfilm
  • Couldn't find anything in the indexes of Owen Sound newspapers
  • Couldn't find anything in the indexes of Guelph newspapers
  • I found a death certification for a Sybil Williams in England in 1874, but it is not her [D03877]

Any other suggestions of places to look? Or next steps to try?

X00001 - The Conclusion!

I've had a couple of posts so far about trying to find the death date and record for Edwin Ashton. The first post described the issue. The second post was an update when I was able to find Edwin Ashton and Clara Scattergood in the 1939 Register.

The names and dates of birth in the 1939 register [D03865] matched Edwin's known birth date. And the location of Alcester matched the location on the 1950 death certificate. The informant on the death certificate [D00319] was an E.W. Savage who married an Edith Ashton who would have been born about 1920. So all that was left was to link Edith Ashton to Edwin Ashton

It appears that Edith was born in Canada and the 1920 birth registrations aren't available yet. I couldn't find Edwin in the 1921 Canadian census, so he may have been back in England by then. But I managed to find a ship's passenger list [D01427] with Edwin, Clara and Edith. And the ages all match. So we can consider this one closed!

Baptism Record for Henriette Mundy

A few months ago, I had posted that I had found the baptism record index for Henriette Elizabeth Mundy. Well, since then I have received a copy of the original record:

So that wraps that up.

Well sort of...there's now a new lingering question. At the time of the baptism, Henry Mundy would have been deceased, but the baptism record does not indicate that at all. It might be something that just wasn't recorded, or perhaps it's something more.

Update: Have created X00274 to investigate the question

Big Breakthrough!!

So, with a great deal of help from a distant cousin and the French Heritage Project, I think i may have finally broken through the Delaheye-LaForme brick wall on my maternal line and managed to trace the line back to the early 1600s and a fille-du-roi names Francoise Michau. More information to come later....

Another wrong turn

Some time ago, I found a baptism record in West Heslerton, Yorkshire, England for a Judith Hardy. I suspect that this is a sister of Lancelot Hardy as they were both born to an unmarried Hannah Hardy. Oddly, the baptismal record states that she was born on November 25, 1794 but the bishop's transfer states that she was baptized on November 25, 1794. So, either one of them is wrong or both events happened on the same day.

Baptismal Record:

Bishop's Transfer:

Later on, I found evidence of a Judith Hardy who married a John Morse in the US. The year of birth, 1794, matched the Judith born in West Heslerton.

But when I checked the death records for her, it appears that she was born in Groveland, Massachusetts.

So, it's definitely not the same one. Now the question is, what happened to the Judith Hardy born in West Heslerton?

Samina Foxwell Williams death information found!

Some time ago I was looking at the cemetery listings for Greenwood Cemetery in Owen Sound. The listings for the much of the Williams family (Thomas Williams & Sybel Foxwell) list the plot location as G-BLO-6.

So, out of curiousity I decided to have a look to see what other names showed up in that plot. I came across a Minnie McInnis who died November 26, 1878:

I figured that Minnie McInnis could very well be Samina Foxwell Williams, youngest daughter of Thomas & Sybel. The age of 36 would certainly match, as Samina would have been born in 1841. And Minnie could be a derivative of Samina. But I couldn't find a death record for her in Ontario. Nor could I find a marriage between a Samina Williams and a person with the surname McInnis in Ontario. Samina was unmarried in the 1871 Ontario census, so the marriage would have taken place between 1871 and 1878.

Recently however, I found this death notice in the listing for the Owen Sound Times Birth, Marriage and Deaths:

Mrs. John Douglas would be Louisa Williams Douglas, her sister. So she married a Joseph McInnis between 1871 and 1878 and later died in Walnut, Iowa. I haven't found the records for either the marriage or the death, but at least I have some more information about both.

Update on X00001

A month ago, I posted my query about determining Edwin Ashton's date and place of death (X00001). Since then I have made an interesting discovery that is changing my perspective.

I've found an Edwin Ashton in the 1939 register:

But here's the interesting information:
  • Edwin Ashton's date of death is listed as 12 Nov 1884, which matches the Edwin Ashton born in Blackburn
  • Edwin's wife's name is Clara, which also matches the Edwin Ashton born in Blackburn
  • But the most interesting thing is that location in 1939 is Alcester, Warwickshire, which matches the death location of one of the Edwin Ashton death certificates that I found for 1950.
So, this means I need to re-examine my previous conclusion. I had previously ruled out that death certificate because the location and timing of his daughter's birth didn't make sense. But with this latest update, it looks very much as if the Edwin Ashton who was born in Blackburn and the Edwin Ashton who died in Alcester are the same person. Watch this space for more.....

More options for the Margaret Farriage query

A few months ago, I posted an analysis of query X00055 - the search for more information on Margaret Farriage. I was at the OGS conference this weekend and talked to a few people about this brick wall. The people that I talked to made a number of suggestions for further research:

  • Investigate the names of the marriage witnesses to see if there are any clues there
  • Check ships passenger lists for the late 20s or early 30s and see if there are any similar names that could be possibilities
  • Check church records for Nelson Township and Toronto Township for the time period
  • Check land ownership for George Miller or names similar to Farriage. Check for neighbours - was Amelia Grant Munro living in the area?
  • Research the children of George Miller (both with Margaret Farriage and Amelia Grant Munro)
  • Possibly consider Scottish naming patterns, and look for a father named William for either George or Margaret
  • Check out Ryan Gilcrest's book on marriage records
  • Check out OGS' TONI database

The people that I spoke to were largely in agreement with my theory that the surname of "Farriage" is likely an error.

X00001: When/where did Edwin Ashton die?

For X00001, I’m looking for a date of death and place for Edwin Ashton, Lawrence Ashton’s older brother. The one lead I have is from the Ashton family bible:

The year of death is recorded as 1950. Interestingly, the listing for Edwin shows only the year of death, but for all of the other children there is a full date given. This implies to me that whoever was the owner of the bible was not likely in close contact with Edwin.

Here is a roundup of what I know so far:
  • Edwin’s date of birth is November 12, 1884 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England [D00373]
  • Edwin’s second marriage was in 1923 to Clara Scattergood Butler (b 1884) [D00737]
  • Edwin seems to have moved back and forth between England and Canada. He was married in Canada, but he fought for the British Army in WW1.
  • I haven’t found much in the way of evidence after 1923, although I have found Edwin and Clara were on a passenger list arriving in Glasgow, Scotland in 1939

So, assuming that the year of death of 1950 is accurate, the options for death location are Canada, Scotland, England or elsewhere.

Scotland Possibility
I checked the Scotland death registrations for 1950 and did not find any Edwin Ashtons.

Ontario Possibility
Death registrations are not yet available for 1950 in Ontario. See next steps below

England Possibility
I’ve found two Edwin Ashtons listed as having died in 1950:
  • Ashton, Edwin. Age 85, Hitchin, Hertfordshire vol 4b p153 [D02301]
  • Ashton, Edwin. Age 65 Alcester, Warwickshire vol 9c p2 [D00319]
We can rule out the first possibility [D02301] because the age is off by about 20 years.
For the second possibility [D00319], the informant on the registration is a son-in-law named E.W. Savage. I found a marriage record between an E.W. Savage and Edith Ashton [D00004] in 1942. So, the question is, is Edith Ashton the daughter of this Edwin Ashton? According to the marriage record, Edith would have been born about 1921 in Alcester, Warwickshire England and Edwin & Ellen Ashton would have been living in Canada in 1921, so very unlikely.

Elsewhere
Since this is the least likely of the possibilities, I'm going to rule out the others before proceeding with this one.

Next Steps
  • Wait for the 1950 Death registrations to be released for Ontario (should be in 2023)
  • Continue to monitor Find a grave and other sites for Clara Ashton & Edwin Ashton in Canada/US cemeteries
  • Possibly check 1945 register to see if he was living in Ontario then
  • Check Ontario newspapers for a death notice
  • Check Toronto Directories to see if living in Ontario

Ruling out possible marriage record for William Hardy

I came across the following indexed record [D03486] for a marriage between a William Hardie and a Janet Burns in 1845:

At first it seemed like it could be a match for William Hardy's first marriage to a woman named Jane. I have, however, decided to rule it out for the following reasons:
  • The location of York Mills is not exactly where I would have expected the marriage to be. The family seems to have settled around Peel Region, although they moved around a bit in the first few years, so York Mills is not outside the realm of possibility.
  • The spelling of the last name as "Hardie" rather than "Hardy" is off, although I have seen it spelled that way before.
  • The last name of the bride of "Burns" is not what I would have expected. Other records point to a maiden name of "Irwin".
  • The biggest issue seems to be the timing of the marriage. The marriage date given is 1845. Most records seem to point towards a birth year of 1830 for William Hardy and 1832 for Jane. This would put them at 15 and 13 years of age at the time of the marriage. Their first child (as far as I have been able to tell) was born around 1856, so most likely their marriage would have been closer to 1855.

All in all it seems to be too far off from the known data to be a match. But the timing of the marriage seems to make this very unlikely to be the same couple. So, I'm ruling this document out.

Investigating Lancelot Hardy after 1850

There are two Lancelot Hardy's in the Hardy family that I am investigating: One born about 1793 and his son born about 1827, both in Yorkshire England. I have both of their baptism records, and they both appear in the 1841 census, but there is very little information about either of them after 1850.

Issues to investigate:
  1. What happened to Lancelot the younger? The older appears to have died in 1874 and is buried in Churchville Cemetery, Meadowvale, Ontario, Canada. I haven't found a death notice or record for either of them and have not found a cemetery record or burial record for Lancelot the younger.
  2. Which of the two married Jane Tricker? There is evidence that a Lancelot Hardy and Jane Tricker were parents to a Sarah Jane Hardy (b. abt. 1844), Henry Reilly Hardy (b. abt 1849) and George Hardy (b. abt. 1860). So, that would suggest a marriage date of about 1843 or so. She remarried in 1876, so whichever one she married would have died before then.
  3. Which of the two married Ester Riley in 1850? There are no ages or parents given for the marriage, so can't determine which one it is. And I have not seen Ester Riley in any other record.
  4. Which Lancelot Hardy appears in the 1861 census with Jane? The age is shown as 50, or a year of birth of 1811, so it could conceivably be either of them.
  5. When did Ester Riley Hardy die? Where is she buried?
  6. When did Ann Wood Hardy die? Where is she buried?

Known Facts:
  • Lancelot Hardy the older born about 1793 in Yorkshire, Married to Ann Wood
  • Lancelot Hardy the younger born about 1827 in Yorkshire
  • Both appear in the 1841 census in England
  • Presumably the family emigrated to Canada in their early 1840s, around 1840
  • One of them likely married Jane Tricker
  • One of them likely married Ester Riley (the marriage years overlap, so it was likely not the same person married to both)
  • Lancelot Hardy the older died in 1874
  • None of the above names have been found in the 1851 or 1871 censuses. One of the Lancelots and Jane Tricker have been found in the 1861 Census of Canada.
  • Maria Hardy, daughter of Lancelot & Anne Wood Hardy was born Oct 29, 1844, so Anne Wood Hardy was alive at that date.
  • One of them appears in an 1866 directory of the Home District and the profession is listed as “Gardener”. Lancelot Hardy the elder’s profession appears as a miller on most records, so this could likely be the younger one

Possibilities:

1. Lancelot Hardy the older married Ester Riley & Lancelot Hardy the younger married Jane Tricker
Timeline:
Anne Wood Hardy dies between 1844 and 1850
Lancelot Hardy the younger marries Jane Tricker about 1843
Lancelot Hardy the older marries Ester Riley in 1850
Lancelot Hardy the older dies in 1874
Lancelot Hardy the younger dies before 1876
Ester Riley Hardy dies ??

2. Lancelot Hardy the younger married Ester Riley & Lancelot Hardy the older married Jane Tricker
Timeline:
Anne Wood Hardy dies about 1844
Lancelot Hardy the older marries Jane Tricker about 1844
Lancelot Hardy the younger marries Ester Riley in 1850
Lancelot Hardy the older dies in 1874
Lancelot Hardy the younger dies ??
Ester Riley Hardy dies ??

Documents that would give some answers:
  • If I could find Lancelot Sr or Jr, Ester or Jane in the 1851 census
  • If I could find the other Lancelot or Ester in the 1861 census
  • If I could find Lancelot Sr or Jr, Ester or Jane in the 1871 census
  • If I could find a death record for Lancelot the older
  • If I could find a death record for Lancelot the younger, or any later record, for that matter
  • If I could find a death/burial record for Esther Riley Hardy
  • If I could find a date of death/burial record for Anne Wood Hardy
  • If I could find a will for either Lancelot Hardy
  • If I could find either one in land records

Next actions:
  • Look for will for Lancelot Hardy (either)
  • Look for land records for either Lancelot hardy
  • Check for assessment/collector rolls for either Lancelot hardy

X00241: Are Ann Hardy Barnhill and Mary Hardy Hyatt Sisters?

One of families that I’m researching at the present time is the Hardy family who came from Farndale, Yorkshire, England to what is now Peel Region in Ontario Canada in the 1840s. Lancelot Hardy and Ann Wood had several children and I’ve been able to trace most of them to Ontario.

Right now I’m trying to determine if Ann Hardy Barnhill and Mary Hardy Hyatt are sisters.

Ann Hardy married John Barnhill (1824-1868) around 1862. They had two children (that I have been able to identify so far): Nancy Maria Barnhill (1863-1929) and William John Barnhill (1867-1909).

Mary Hardy married Matthew Hyatt (1846-1909) around 1869. They had several children before she died in 1884. Matthew remarried after she died.

I’m definitely sure that Ann Hardy is the daughter of Lancelot and Ann; one record I’ve found gives their names as the parents. I haven’t found the same for Mary yet, but Lancelot and Ann did have a daughter named Mary and the information is definitely consistent with their daughter being the same one that was married to Matthew Hyatt. But I have yet to find definite proof.

The two families were definitely close. They lived in the same area and after Mary died, some of her children started living with the Barnhills and adopted the surname Barnhill. So, it's very likely.

X00199 - Solved!

A couple of years ago I went to the Peel Archives to look up the Perkins-Bull collection for the surname Hardy. In it, I came across this record:

The record indicates that Lancelot Hardy the younger lived from about 1860 to 1896 and was buried in St Peter’s Cemetery in Erindale.

According to the record above, there was a Lancelot Hardy who was born about 1860 and died in 1896 and was buried at St Peter’s Anglican church in Erindale. The problem is that:
  • I can’t find a death record in the Ontario death registrations for a Lancelot Hardy in 1896
  • The cemetery transcriptions for St Peter’s Cemetery do not show a Lancelot Hardy
  • I’ve contacted the Anglican Church archives and they don’t have a burial record

I also went to the cemetery and couldn’t find a stone.

I was about to conclude that Perkins-Bull had the wrong information, or that no stone existed, but then I checked the cemetery transcription for the nearby Erindale Cosmopolitan Cemetery and found a listing there.

Then I went to cemetery and actually found the stone. It’s very worn and difficult to read, but you can make out some of it.

Next, to see about finding a death or burial record.

Finding Margaret Farriage: X00055 Analysis

Some time ago, I had posted that the Margaret Farriage that is married to George Miller is not the one born in Rothbury, England in 1804. So, it's time to re-evaluate and take a look at what is known and what is unknown.

Known facts about Margaret Farriage:
  • The only source that I have found that gives her full name is from the Marriage Bonds of Upper Canada p 239 [D00800]
  • She married George Miller, carriage maker on Oct 25, 1832 in Toronto Township (now Peel Region). Church not known. [D00800]
  • At the time of her marriage was living in Nelson Township (now Burlington, Ontario) [D00800]
  • She appears to have given birth to two sons, John born about 1833 and William born 10 May 1834. I don't have sources identified at this time to confirm John Miller's birth, so that may not be reliable.
  • William Miller's Marriage Records lists his parents as George & Margaret Miller [D03152]. No maiden name given.
  • She likely died some time between May 10 1834 (likely date of birth for William Miller) and Dec 9 1835 (likely date when George Miller married Amelia Grant Munro) [need source]
  • According to the 1891 Census, she is of Scottish Origin [D00772]. That being said, this was several years after she had died and William Miller would have been very young when she died.
  • At some point, the Miller family moved from Nelson to Cooksville [Need Sources].

Analysis:
  • To this date, I have not found the surname Farriage elsewhere in Halton, Peel or southern Ontario for that matter, so I am questioning whether or not that is the real surname. On the marriage licence record itself, the name Farriage was spelled exactly like carriage and marriage which also appear on the form, so it could easily be something that sounded like Farriage.
  • Based on the fact that she was married in 1832 and George Miller was born in 1809, a likely range for her year of birth would be 1805 to 1815
  • Based on her last child birth and when George got remarried, a likely range for year of death would be 1834-1835
  • As mentioned in a previous blog post, there is a Margaret Farridge born in Rothbury, Northumberland, England in 1804 [D00089], but I have ruled out that individual as a possibility because she died in 1809 [D01638] [See D03104]. I have checked the Baptism registers to see if the family renamed a later child Margaret but did not find anything.

Research Strategies:
  1. Investigate the possibility that her last name was not Farriage. There is only one source that mentions a name. Note that the written name Farriage appears exactly as carriage. Could it have been that the person writing the bond spelled it the same way as carriage or marriage? We can rule out this possibility if we find a second source that corroborates the name. Some things to pursue:
    • Look for a second source that mentions the marriage and check the name: church records, newspapers, etc. George Miller was strongly Weselyan Methodist
    • Look for a marriage record for William Miller & Jane Hardy (married 1857) [D03152] Marriage record does not mention a maiden name
    • Look for records (marriage, death, census etc) for John Miller born 1833 [X00223]

  2. Look for records of a Margaret Farriage, or Farriage family living in the Burlington Area
    • Check with the Burlington Public Library for directories, news, anything from the time period
      • Gravestones/cemetery records
      • Directories

X00052 Solved!

It's always nice when you find something that you weren't looking for. I was looking through the baptism records of St James Anglican Cathedral in Toronto. I didn't find the record I was hoping for, but instead, I found this:

Now, I still need to get the original document, but from the index, it appears that I have the proof I was looking for to prove that Henry Mundy and Ann Taylor are the parents of Henriette Elizabeth Mundy.

Also of note is that Frances Moore who would have been her brother-in-law is one of the sponsors. Not sure who Mary Moore is though.

So, as an updated timeline, we have:
  • March 1827 - Henry Mundy marries Ann Sidney Taylor
  • October 1827 - Henry Mundy dies in a boating accident
  • December 1827 - Ann Sidney Taylor Mundy gives birth to Henrietta Elizabeth Mundy
  • January 1827 - Henriette E.Mundy's Baptism
  • May 1831 - Thomas Dority marries Ann Sidney Taylor Mundy
  • August 1848 - Henrietta Elizabeth Mundy marries John McLeod
  • December 1850 - John and Henrietta McLeod have a daughter Annie Agnes McLeod

Of course, now that I confirmed these parents, I now need to start new X-Files to find each of their parents:

X00080 Solved!

Question: Multiple William Hardys in Peel in the 1871 Census. Which one is the correct one?

Details/Background:
The 1871 Census of Ontario has two listings for a William Hardy born about 1830 in Peel Region. One in Meadowvale [D01576] and one in Streetsville [D03311]. The question is which one is the one that is the son of Lancelot Hardy?

Analysis:
The William Hardy of Meadowvale [D01576] appears to be the correct one for a number of reasons:
  • The other Hardy family members also settled around Meadowvale
  • The names and ages of the other family members seems to coincide with the family in other censuses.
  • William Hardy’s profession is listed as a blacksmith, which coincides with other census results as well as the profession listed in the marriage record between him and Aveline Burns [D00733].

X00153 Solved!

I managed to come across the marriage record for William Miller and Jane Hardy, June 22 1857.

Some interesting findings:
* It's not where I would have expected the marriage to be. It's in Wellington, Prince Edward County. I haven't found any connections to Prince Edward County with either the Miller or Hardy families.
* William's place of birth is listed as the United States, which may be a lead, although other sources list his place of birth as Upper Canada.
* This confirms the names of both sets of parents, as expected. One thing to note is that this is only the second record that I have seen that lists William's mother as Margaret. Only the first name is given unfortunately, because I have only found one record so far that lists Margaret's last name, and I have my doubts about it (see X00055)

Update: I had another look at the record. FamilySearch has the location indexed as Wellington, Hillier, Prince Edward County. But I think this is a mistake and the location is actually Wellington County. Most of the other names on the page live in towns in Wellington county and it would make far more sense for the two to have been married in Wellington County, rather than Wellington, Prince Edward County
